Do you ever run into someone you know while you're grocery shopping? What's the best part of going to a free concert in the park? Meeting up with friends, right? What if you really wanted to go on a walk or see a movie? Call a friend, right? I feel like I'm living outside of the bubble, looking in. We live in this great neighborhood, in a really cool city, but we have no roots. We're also all totally illiterate and don't speak the language, so that's a huge part of it too. We've been experiencing a sort of communication apprehension when we have to interact with an Israeli. Before we walk into a store or restaurant, we have to gear up for the interaction and Jamie and I usually end up daring one another to walk in first and start the conversation. It's funny, actually, and I think it will get easier with time. Overall, we're having a great time and getting mostly everything that we want or need, but I do miss that layer of being "in the know," and living among friends. Meanwhile, we love our neighborhood, so I thought I'd give you a flavor of our every day life. In Merkaz ha Carmel, we... RESPECT THE UNDERGROUND SOCIETY OF THE CATS. Cat= (Chatul) חתול MAKE PEACE WITH MOUNTAINS & STAIRS. Stairs= (Madrigot) מדרגות Haifa is built on mountains, and we live at the top of one. I've been walking about 3-5 miles per day, and what goes down, must trek back up (or take the bus). We also live on the top floor of a 3-story walk-up. MAKE PEACE WITH DRIVERS WHO PARK THEIR CARS ON SIDEWALKS. Cars=(Michonit) מכוניות We noticed that, though people seem like they're constantly rushing around, they almost always stop at the crosswalk and wait for the pedestrian walk sign to turn green, even if there's no car in sight. For some reason, though, they see the sidewalks as an option for parking. CAN'T GET ENOUGH FRESH JUICE! We have a really cool juicer in our kitchen, and can't stop juicing. Nina is mainly the resident juice-maker (pomegranate and citrus). OH, AND THE SOUNDS...Honking horns, babies crying, live music playing, radios playing music, cats fighting, rain raining, construction workers constructing, more babies, way more cats.
Dado Beach Promenade, HaifaWe took the bus, along with about 15 young (18-19 years old) IDF soldiers, to the central bus station by the beach and found our way to Dado Beach and Promenade. It was a warm, sunny afternoon--about 82 degrees F. The incomparable Mediterranean Sea was also 82 degrees! So, the warmth of the ocean was acceptable to this Florida girl, and I had a lovely swim with my kids. What do these 4 pictures all have in common?
